Is it permissible to fast this day if one slept before Maghrib and woke up after Fajr?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If someone sleeps before Maghrib and wakes up after the dawn of the following day, their fast is not valid according to the majority of scholars, due to their not having made the intention to fast from the night before. They cite the hadith: "Whoever does not make the intention to fast before Fajr, there is no fast for him."

However, the Malikis and one narration from Ahmad hold that a single intention at the beginning of the month is sufficient.

The intention can be merely a thought of fasting.

The precautionary measure is to adopt the view of the majority and make up that day.

The case of dispute is specifically for someone who slept before Maghrib and remained asleep until Fajr. As for someone who woke up during the night and made the intention, their fast is valid by consensus.
