What is the stance of Islam and Sharia on polygyny, and what are its legitimate boundaries? Is a girl who accepts marriage to a married man considered bad? Is a man considered a betrayer of his wife if he marries another? Are girls who face difficulty in marrying due to economic and social circumstances more deserving of benefiting from the legitimacy of polygyny in Islam?

Polygyny is permissible for a man who is capable of marriage and who is mindful of justice among his wives. It is not permissible to impose restrictions or conditions that have not been brought by the Sharia. There is no blame upon a woman for accepting marriage to a married man if she is pleased with his religiosity and character. This does not threaten the institution of the family as long as the man is just and treats his wives kindly. Sharia rulings do not change with the change of time except by abrogation, and there is no evidence for the abrogation of the ruling on polygyny. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, not marrying another woman during the lifetime of Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, does not indicate the prohibition or restriction of polygyny. His rejection, peace and blessings be upon him, of Ali’s marriage to another woman during Fatima’s lifetime was due to a specific circumstance or a prior condition.
