Is it permissible for someone to make the call to prayer (adhan) while not in a state of ritual purity (wudu)?

It is disliked for the mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer) to give the adhan while not in a state of purity. However, his adhan is valid and sufficient if he gives it while impure, whether he is in a state of minor impurity (hadath asghar) or major impurity (junub). The proof for this dislike is the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "I disliked mentioning Allah except in a state of purity."
