Is it permissible for a woman to wear an open abaya that she holds with her hand, such that her body becomes visible if she gets busy or lets go of it?
We have previously clarified the permissibility of wearing an open abaya from the front if it does not reveal anything of the body or adornment. However, if wearing it might lead to the exposure of a woman's body, then it is not permissible, because the primary purpose of the is modesty and covering. Allah Almighty said: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful." (Al-Ahzab: 59). It must be noted that no specific garment is required for the hijab; rather, anything that fulfills the conditions of lawful dress is considered hijab.
