What is the ruling on singling out Saturday for fasting? May Allah reward you.

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is disliked to single out Saturday for fasting, due to the hadith of Abdullah ibn Busr, and to differ from the Jews who venerate this day. The dislike is removed if a Muslim fasts Saturday connected to the day before it or the day after it, or if it coincides with a habitual fast for him, or if it coincides with the fast of 'Arafah or 'Ashura', or if his fasting is for another reason such as a vow. The aforementioned hadith is subject to differing opinions regarding its authenticity (sahih) and weakness (da'if); some scholars have considered it abrogated or problematic (mudtarib), while others have seen no contradiction with other hadiths, and that the prohibition therein relates to singling it out for fasting.
