What is the ruling on one who sleeps through prayer out of laziness, while remembering it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Prayer holds a great status in Islam; it is the second pillar after the Two Testimonies, and the first of a servant's deeds to be examined. Preserving prayer means performing it at its appointed time. Abandoning it or being negligent about it incurs a severe warning. Sleeping through prayer can be a dereliction for which one is sinful if one sleeps after its time has begun, knowing that one will not wake up until after its time has ended. However, if one sleeps before its time has begun, there is no sin upon one, even if one does not wake up until after its time has ended.
