Is it permissible for someone performing I‘tikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan, in a mosque near his home, to go home after work hours to perform ghusl, then return to the mosque, and for this process to be repeated throughout the period of I‘tikāf, and to come home before going to work to change his clothes and perform ghusl? And is it a condition for the validity of I‘tikāf that the one performing I‘tikāf does not enter his marital home?
If a man intends to perform I'tikaf daily after returning from work, and he performs I'tikaf for the rest of his day and night at his home, then goes to his work, his I'tikaf is valid because it is limited to the duration he intended.
However, if he intends to perform I'tikaf for the entire last ten days, his I'tikaf is not invalidated by his leaving his residence for a matter that cannot be dispensed with, such as fetching food, fulfilling a need, or a necessary ghusl (ritual bath) if it is not possible in the mosque. Although it is better for him to appoint someone to bring him what he needs. But if he leaves for a matter that can be dispensed with, or engages in intercourse, his I'tikaf is invalidated. If the I'tikaf is invalidated and he wishes to perform it again, he must renew his intention.
