The question

What is the ruling on the days separating menstrual bleeding—are they days of purity or menstruation? And what is the difference if this coincides with the usual days of one's period or not? And is a make-up required if this occurs in Ramadan?

The answer

According to the Malikis, a woman who experiences an interruption in her bleeding for a day or days, and then it returns before half a month has passed, should combine the days of bleeding and disregard the days of purity until her customary period is completed. After that, any blood that appears is considered Istihadha (non-menstrual bleeding). She must perform ghusl (ritual bath) every time the bleeding stops to pray, fast, and her husband is permitted to have intercourse with her. Al-Kharashi clarifies that if menstruation occurs at its usual time and then stops, and then returns before a complete state of purity is achieved, she should combine the days of bleeding. As for the blood that appears after combining more than the maximum duration of menstruation (her usual period or half a month), it is considered Istihadha. The days on which blood appeared during Ramadan must be made up.
