Is it permissible for a traveler to combine some prayers and offer others at their prescribed times?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for a traveler to combine two prayers according to the majority of scholars. So, one prays Dhuhr and Asr as two rak'ahs each, and Maghrib as three rak'ahs and Isha as two rak'ahs, either by combining them early (Taqdim) or delaying them (Ta'khir). It is also permissible for him to combine some prayers and not others. Combining prayers for a traveler is a Sunnah if he is actively traveling. However, if he has disembarked, the Sunnah is not to combine unless there is a need to do so. Whoever travels to a country and does not intend to stay there for more than four days has the ruling of a traveler, and thus has the permission to shorten and combine prayers.
