The question

Is the zakat on gold due in Ramadan with the zakat on money, or must the zakat year for gold be calculated from its purchase date in Safar? And do gold and silver now share the same ruling as paper currencies?

The answer

Currencies are subject to the same rulings as gold and silver in legal matters. If the value of the gold has completed a hawl (lunar year) coinciding with Ramadan, like the rest of the wealth, then zakat should be paid in Ramadan, because purchasing gold does not interrupt the hawl of its value. However, if the value of the gold has an independent hawl, then zakat on the gold is paid when its hawl is completed, and its zakat is not necessarily paid along with the rest of the wealth, because it is an acquired asset that, according to the majority of scholars, is not combined with other assets for the hawl. It is permissible to pay its zakat in Ramadan as an advancement of zakat after the nisab (minimum threshold) has been met.
