Is it permissible to name a newborn "Al-Masih" (the Messiah)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars have mentioned that the disliked and forbidden names are those that involve servitude to other than Allah, or are exclusive to Allah such as (Ar-Rahman), or have a blameworthy meaning such as (Harb - war), or have no meaning such as (Mimi), or involve self-praise such as (Barrah - pious woman). There is no shar'i prohibition on naming with 'Al-Masih' (the Messiah), but it is preferable to choose names that the Sharia encourages, such as ('Abdullah and 'Abdur-Rahman), especially since Muslims have not accustomed themselves to using this name.
