Is someone who wore the niqab and then took it off considered an apostate?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A woman who wore the hijab and then removed it has committed a sin that necessitates repentance. However, this does not reach the level of apostasy unless she deems immodest display (tabarruj) permissible and denies the obligation of hijab, as Allah Almighty says: ﴿And do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance.﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 33] And His saying: ﴿O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 59] As for a woman who used to wear the niqab and then removed it, wearing another type of covering hijab instead, there is no harm in that.
