The answer

Spouses should abandon conflict through dialogue and understanding, and avoid divorce as much as possible.

If the spouses agree to cease marital relations without the husband uttering the word of divorce, then no divorce occurs, and the marital bond remains. They can return to their previous state, and the wife's oath to forbid herself to her husband does not affect the marital bond and requires her to offer an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yameen).

If the husband utters the word of divorce, and it is a revocable divorce (one or two pronouncements), he may take his wife back before the ' (waiting period) ends. If the 'iddah ends, she does not become lawful for him except with a new marriage contract.

If the divorce is three pronouncements, the wife does not become lawful for her husband until she marries another man and is then divorced from him after consummation of that marriage.
