Is the examination period a valid excuse for missing congregational prayers in the mosque?
Congregational prayer is obligatory, and studying is not an excuse for missing it. Ibn Umm Maktum, may Allah be pleased with him, who was blind, asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for permission to be excused. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Do you hear the call to prayer?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then respond." Narrated by Muslim. If blindness is not an excuse, how can anything less be an excuse? Obedience to Allah by observing the obligatory prayers is one of the greatest causes of receiving blessings. Allah Almighty says: {And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth} [Al-A'raf: 96]. Allah Almighty has praised those whom neither trade nor sale diverts from the remembrance of Allah and the establishment of prayer.
