What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding moving to a separate house for the wife and children while including the mother, given the financial ability and desire to be dutiful to the mother, and the husband's fear of saddening her and reducing her children's visits to her?
It is obligatory to combine dutifulness to the mother and kind treatment of the wife, giving everyone their due right. It is the wife's right to have an independent dwelling that preserves her privacy. If it is possible to buy a house and convince the mother to move into it with you, then that combines dutifulness to the mother and the wife's right. If the mother refuses to move, then it is preferable to convince the wife to be patient with staying with the mother. If the wife refuses, then it is possible to buy a private house for the wife and children while continuing to take care of the mother. There is no sin upon you in that as long as you do not fall short in being dutiful to her and obeying her in what is good.
