What is the ruling on the Friday sermon if the Imam confines it to reciting Al-Fatihah?
If the preacher did not exceed reciting Al-Fatihah in his sermon, then the sermon is invalid. This is because the majority of jurists stipulate, for the validity of the Friday sermon, that it must consist of two separate sermons before the prayer, including praise of Allah, blessings upon His Messenger, and exhortation to piety. If the preacher did not deliver the sermon in Arabic and limited himself to reciting Al-Fatihah in his own language, then if he is unable to speak Arabic, the preponderant opinion among most scholars is that this is sufficient for him, and the sermon is valid despite the inability. This is what the Islamic Fiqh Academy has decided. The Imam should be advised of the necessity of delivering the two sermons, even in his own language, if he is unable to speak Arabic.
