The question

What is the obligatory zakat on a plot of land that a husband bought for the purpose of preserving wealth and increasing its value, preparatory to selling it and using its price to build a private home for himself and his offspring? Is the zakat calculated on its purchase price or on its value after the passing of a full year (hawl)?

The answer

This land is subject to zakat as trade goods. If the husband purchases it, and its value reaches the nisab by itself or when combined with other money or trade goods he owns, and a full year (hawl) passes on the original nisab with which it was purchased, then its value at the time the hawl completes is considered, and one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) of it is to be given as zakat. Thus, what matters is its value when the hawl completes, not its purchase value.
