An IUD (intrauterine device) does not need to be removed after its insertion. The concerns that led to its prohibition have already occurred. There is no harm in keeping it in place afterward to delay pregnancy unless it causes harm, in which case it must be removed to prevent that harm. Its removal is further emphasized if another safe method of contraception is available during the breastfeeding period.
