What are the practical steps to stop lying?

Among the things that help in abandoning lying are: the certainty that Allah sees, hears, and holds accountable for speech, as Allah Almighty says: (He does not utter any word except that with him is an observer, ready [to record]). And knowing that lying contradicts faith and is one of the characteristics of hypocrites, for faith is founded on truthfulness. Also, accompanying righteous people contributes to righteousness, and cutting off bad companions protects from drifting astray. And supplicating and earnestly imploring Allah for steadfastness, safeguarding the tongue, and truthfulness, and seeking times of responsiveness [to prayers]. Lying is also a characteristic of weak-willed and cowardly individuals, and part of perfect manhood is to bear responsibility for mistakes, not to escape through lying.
