Cohabiting and associating with the unrighteous carries harm and temptation, from which one must be wary. A person is influenced by those with whom he associates. Therefore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us to be careful in choosing companions and forbade us from befriending non-believers. The questioner must separate from these people and seek righteous company that will aid him in his religious and worldly affairs. It is not permissible to cohabit with them except in cases of extreme necessity. As for the food of atheists, slaughtered animals and their derivatives are forbidden from it. Anything else is permissible, provided it is not impure, unlawful, or harmful. The permissibility of living in lands of disbelief is conditional upon being safe from temptation and being able to establish the rituals of the religion.
