What is the ruling on sitting with an unreligious, unlearned person?

If associating with irreligious people leads to a reprehensible act (munkar) or a forbidden act (mahzhur shar'i), then it is harmful and must be abandoned, because a person is influenced by their companion. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade accompanying non-believers, saying: "A person is on the religion of his intimate friend, so let each of you look at whom he befriends," and "Do not accompany anyone but a believer."

However, if associating with them does not lead to sin, then it is permissible. And if it is for the purpose of giving advice and inviting to good, with safety from harm, then it is recommended and may even be obligatory, based on his, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Religion is sincere advice," and "For Allah to guide a man through you is better for you than possessing red camels." So, mixing with people and enduring their harm in order to guide them is one of the greatest acts of obedience.
