What is the meaning of extremism (tanattu‘) in Islam? And is covering the face, growing a beard, adhering to all the actions of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and rejecting all innovations in religion considered extremism? And what is the meaning of his statement, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, "He was not given a choice between two matters but that he chose the easier of them"?

In conclusion, the reprehensible extremism (tanattu') is: exaggeration in worship and dealings, innovation in religion, affectedness and artificiality in speech, and delving into matters that are not one's concern and asking about things that should not be asked about. As for adherence to the outward rituals of religion and compliance with commands, it is not considered extremism, because the decisive judge in this matter is the evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah. And 'Aishah's hadith: "Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was given the choice of two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, as long as it was not a sin," does not mean abandoning the Shari'ah. Rather, it refers to worldly matters or supererogatory acts and recommended deeds. As for obligatory duties and forbidden acts, one must adhere to them strictly.
