The question

What is your advice regarding approving marriage to a man who is married to two women and is committed to his religion, and who proposed to me a year ago, but my family did not agree because he is polygamous, knowing that I am convinced of this marriage but my family does not approve? And should I reopen the topic with my family or not?

The answer

The questioner is thanked for her keenness to marry a man of religion and good character. If a man whose religion and character you approve of proposes, then marry him. If the man has another wife, there is no religious impediment to marrying him. If the man desires to marry you, there is nothing religiously preventing you from trying to convince your family. If they are convinced, then praise be to Allah. Otherwise, you have the right to take the matter to the court. Supplication is important, and Istikhara (seeking guidance from Allah) is entrusting the matter to Allah Almighty to choose what is best for His servant. If marriage to this man is facilitated, then it is good and a blessing. Otherwise, seek help from trustworthy people. There is no religious impediment for a woman to seek husbands.
