Is the debt owed by the wife to her husband, for which he demands payment, waived if she says to him: "If anything happens to you, then I have forgiven you"?

If the husband took gold as a loan, it is a debt upon him that must be repaid. He sins by procrastination if he is able to repay, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Procrastination by a rich person is injustice."

If he is in straitened circumstances, he must be given respite until his situation eases, for Allah Almighty says: "And if there is one in adversity, then [let there be] a delay until a time of ease."

As for making his absolution from the debt contingent upon his death, this is not valid according to the majority of scholars, and the debt remains binding upon him, to be taken from the inheritance. However, Ibn al-Qayyim chose the validity of this, considering it an absolution conditional upon a stipulation or a bequest.
