Is it obligatory to maintain ties of kinship and visit relatives by suckling as one would blood relatives?

The rulings of suckling (رضاع) differ from those of lineage (نسب). Suckling does not obligate financial support (نفقة), inheritance, or guardianship in marriage (ولاية النكاح), unlike lineage. However, they both share in prohibiting marriage, permitting looking and seclusion (خلوة), and establishing mahramiyyah for travel.

Some scholars have stated that a suckling son should honor and appreciate his suckling mother and father, but he is not obligated to the same level of dutifulness (بر) and maintaining ties of kinship (صلة) that exist between a child and his parents by lineage. This is based on the Almighty's saying: (And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years) Luqman/14, and His saying: (And say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small").

Furthermore, some weak hadiths indicate the desirability of honoring and giving to the one who suckled. Ibn Hibban, in his categorization of the hadith of Abu Al-Tufail, mentioned: "Mention of what is desirable for a person: honoring the one who suckled him in his infancy." Al-Suyuti, in his commentary on Al-Nasa'i, regarding the hadith of Hajjaj ibn Hajjaj, said: "The meaning of 'the blame of suckling' (مذمة الرضاع) is the obligatory right due to suckling. It is as if he asked: What will absolve me of the wet nurse's right so that I have fully fulfilled it? And they used to deem it desirable to give the wet nurse something upon the child's weaning, in addition to her wages."
