What is the ruling on saying: "A morning of smiles from God"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The names and attributes of Allah are Tawqifiyyah (restricted to what is stated in revelation). The attribute of "laughter" (al-Dahik) is affirmed for Allah Almighty by text and consensus, as in the hadith: "Allah laughs at two men, one of whom kills the other, yet both enter Paradise." As for "smiling" (al-Ibtisam), Allah has not been described with it in any authentic hadith, and the hadith in which it was mentioned is weak. Therefore, it is impermissible to affirm the attribute of "smiling" for Allah. The phrase "a morning of smiling from Allah" is inappropriate and incorrect, unless it is meant that the morning is smiling by the grace of Allah, in which case there is no harm, although the greeting of Muslims, "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah" (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you), suffices.
