Does "Al-Mutaffifin" in the noble verse (Woe to Al-Mutaffifin) refer only to those who cheat in trade, or to everyone who takes full measure for himself and gives less than due to others?

The original meaning of the verse, "Woe to those who give less [than due]," refers to defrauding in measure and weight, as indicated by the reason for the verse's revelation.

A "mutaffif" (one who gives less than due) is someone who shortchanges another's right in measure or weight. This includes taking more when receiving and giving less when dispensing. Allah Almighty commanded fairness in measure and weight, and He destroyed the people of Shu'ayb because they defrauded people in these matters.

While the original meaning of the verse relates to measure and weight, it also points to justice in every affair. Some scholars have generalized the meaning of "tatfeef" (giving less than due) to encompass all words and actions, and anyone who diminishes people's rights, whether in money, transactions, or even arguments and articles. The verse indicates that just as a person takes their full right, they must also give people their full rights. Furthermore, the audacity to engage in "tatfeef" indicates a lack of faith in the Last Day.
