The annulment of deeds has many causes, the most dangerous of which is disbelief (kufr), as Allah Almighty says: "If you associate others with Allah, your work will surely be annulled" (Qur’an 39:65). Another cause is raising one's voice above the voice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as Allah Almighty says: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet… lest your deeds be annulled" (Qur’an 49:2). Also, abandoning the 'Asr prayer, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever misses the 'Asr prayer, his deeds are annulled." Furthermore, sins, major transgressions, showing off (riya'), and seeking fame (sum'ah) also annul deeds.
