Is mortgaging homes forbidden?

Pledging houses is Islamically permissible, based on the Almighty’s saying: ﴿then a pledge in hand﴾, and Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) narration that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought food from a Jew and pledged his shield.

However, if the loan is conditioned upon the borrower pledging his house for the lender to benefit from it, then this is not permissible, because it is a loan that brings a benefit.
