Does a person sin by saying: "My pride does not allow me," and does this contradict the noble verse: ﴿And to Him belongs [all] grandeur in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise﴾?

Sheikh Abdurrahman al-Barrak holds that the common people, when using the phrase "my dignity does not allow me," do not intend the forbidden arrogance, but rather mean honor and self-respect, which is a sound meaning with no harm in it. However, it is better to avoid this phrase because of the prohibition against a person being described with kibriya' (haughtiness), for the Prophet ﷺ said: «Dignity is His lower garment, and pride (kibriya') is His upper garment, so whoever competes with Me regarding them, I shall punish him.»
