If petroleum jelly forms an insulating layer that prevents water from reaching the skin, it must be removed before performing ghusl (ritual bath). If it is not removed, it is not necessary to repeat the entire ghusl; rather, the petroleum jelly must be removed and the part that water did not reach should be washed, because continuity (muwalat) is not a condition for ghusl according to the majority of scholars. Afterwards, the prayers that were performed before the impurity was removed must be made up. However, if the petroleum jelly is merely a liquid oil, it does not invalidate the purification.
