What is the Sharia ruling on divorce occurring after the husband repeats the phrase "you are divorced" three times to his wife at different times and under the influence of anger, and does divorce occur if the wife forces her husband to utter it, knowing that both spouses do not wish to divorce?

The majority of jurists hold that an innovated divorce (talaq bid'i) is effective, such as the divorce of a woman in post-natal bleeding (nifas) or the divorce pronounced by an angry person, unless the latter has completely lost his sanity. Similarly, a divorce pronounced as "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" counts as three if intended as such, and as one if only one was intended or if no specific intention was made.

Some scholars do not consider the divorce of a woman in post-natal bleeding to be effective, nor the divorce of an extremely angry person. They also do not consider successive divorces pronounced before a رجعة (revocation of divorce) or a new marriage contract to be more than a single divorce. Due to the differing opinions on this matter, it is advisable to present such cases to trustworthy scholars.
