Is it Islamically permissible for Christians to hold leadership positions?

A distinction should be made between general jobs and important positions involving authority over Muslims. It is permissible to hire a non-Muslim for general jobs, but employing a Muslim is preferable if possible. As for positions that involve authority over Muslims, it is not permissible to appoint a non-Muslim to them, as this contradicts faith and disassociation from disbelievers. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned the prohibition of this and cited evidence, including the story of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab with his Christian scribe, the statement of Imam Ahmad against seeking their help in any Muslim affairs, and the statement of Sheikh Ibn Jibreen against elevating the status of disbelievers or making them leaders over Muslims.
