Is the circulating narration from Imam Muhammad ibn Wasi' regarding the supplication: "O Allah, You have set upon us an enemy who is aware of our faults, seeing us, he and his tribe, from where we cannot see them. O Allah, make him despair of us as You have made him despair of Your mercy, and make him lose hope in us as You have made him lose hope in Your forgiveness, and distance us from him as You have distanced him from Your mercy and Your Paradise" authentic?

The answer is divided into two parts:

First: The aforementioned supplication (du'a) is legislated and sound in meaning. There is no harm in supplicating with it or asking Allah with it. It does not constitute an transgression in supplication, nor is it unusual for servants to ask their Lord to grant them that and protect them from Satan. It is of the same kind as seeking refuge in Allah Almighty from the accursed Satan.

Second: As for the occurrence of the mentioned incident and Satan's coming to Muhammad ibn Wasi', we cannot confirm or deny it due to the absence of a chain of transmission for the story in the books of athar (narrations) and رواية (reports). Perhaps it is more likely that it was a dream and not a real event. One should not definitively assert the authenticity of this story, but there is no harm in the supplication, and there is nothing objectionable in its meanings or wordings.
