Ibn Kathir said in his interpretation of "humazatin lumazatin" (every slanderer, backbiter): The humazah (slanderer) is the one who is excessively critical and finds fault. It was also said that the humazah is one who slanders to the face, and the lumazah (backbiter) is one who slanders from behind. It was also said that it refers to one whose tongue and eye are used to consume people's flesh (backbite) and criticize them. And it was also said that humazah is with the hands and eye, while lumazah is with the tongue.
And regarding His saying, the Most High: "Who gathers wealth and counts it" (alladhī jama'a mālan wa 'addadah): meaning he collects it piece by piece and counts its number. It was also said that his wealth distracted him during the day, so when night came, he slept like a rotten carcass.
Ibn al-Jawzi said in his interpretation of "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you" (la'in shakartum la'azīdannakum): It was said, "If you are grateful for My blessing, I will increase you in obedience to Me."
