What is the ruling on a married husband insulting the religion, and what is the effect of that on the marriage contract and the matters resulting from it?

The scholars are unanimous that insulting religion constitutes disbelief in Allah the Almighty. This is the gravest offense, targeting first the Divine Essence, then the person of the Messenger, and then the rituals of the religion. Anyone who commits this act, if they are Muslim, apostatizes from Islam, as stated in the Almighty's words: (Say: Was it at Allah, and His Verses, and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuses; you have disbelieved after your belief).

The jurists agree that if one of the spouses apostatizes, they are separated. We advise anyone who has committed this act to perform ghusl (definition) (ritual purification), utter the two testimonies of faith, repent to Allah, frequently seek forgiveness, and perform good deeds. They should know that the door of repentance is open. Then, they must renew the marriage contract in the presence of the guardian and two just witnesses. They should be wary of repeating this grave sin, for the sinner does not know when their appointed time will come. Some jurists consider this act to necessitate the occurrence of divorce.
