Is it permissible for a person who is disabled in one of his legs to lead a group of worshipers in prayer, and is it permissible for slaves who have not been freed after the death of their masters to lead people in prayer, and do the heirs have the right to free them?
The imamate (leading of prayer) of a person with a disability in their leg is permissible, regardless of whether they place their leg on the ground or not, and regardless of whether they lead someone similar to them or not. This is the view of the majority of scholars. This is contrary to some Maliki scholars who consider it disliked for him to lead if he does not place his leg on the ground, and to the Hanafis who dislike the imamate of a lame person, and to the Hanbalis who dislike the imamate of a person with an amputated limb, while the prayer itself is valid. As for the imamate of a person with an amputated limb who is unable to stand, it is not valid unless they lead someone similar to them.
