The story is understood as evidence of the existence of hypocrites during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sent for Ibn Salul to question him, which indicates the truthfulness of Zayd ibn Arqam. However, Ibn Salul and his companions swore falsely. The Prophet, peace be upon him, accepted their apparent condition, giving precedence to the statement of those who swore an oath and their advanced age. Then Allah confirmed Zayd's truthfulness through the Quran, thereby combining the confirmation of Zayd and the refutation of the hypocrites. The Prophet, peace be upon him, dealt with the hypocrites in the best possible manner to win their hearts, overlooking their mistakes and accepting their excuses. The justice of the Companions is a matter of consensus among scholars.
