Why might the children of some righteous, diligent parents be uncommitted, while the children of some negligent parents be committed and steadfast in prayer? And is this a tribulation that requires patience?

Belief in Divine Decree (Al-Qadar) is one of the pillars of faith. The righteousness or corruption of children is among the things decreed by Allah. We are commanded to raise our families and protect them from the Fire. So, whoever strives in this will be rewarded, and whoever falls short and neglects it is sinful.

If a father strives and excels in raising his child, yet the child becomes corrupt, this is a trial from Allah, just as it occurred with the Prophets, because the guidance of hearts is in the hand of Allah: "Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided." (Quran 28:56).

If one observes corruption in the child of a scholar, it should be attributed to a trial, not to the father's shortcoming.

Every educator must fulfill their duty, seek help from Allah, and supplicate Him for the righteousness of their children: "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And make righteous for me my offspring." (Quran 46:15).
