Question: Is it permissible to rent a place to be a mosque? May Allah bless you.

The majority of scholars permit renting a house to be used as a mosque, while Abu Hanifa holds that this is not valid. The preponderant opinion is that of the majority, but the rented place does not take on the rulings of a mosque unless it is an endowment (waqf). Scholars have differed regarding the endowment of usufruct (manfa'ah) and not requiring perpetuity. The majority of scholars do not permit this, whereas the Malikis and Ibn Taymiyyah permit it, which implies the permissibility of endowing a structure on rented land as a mosque.
