What is the ruling on praying Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque prayer) in a rented mosque?

If a place is rented for prayer or is merely a prayer room (musalla), it does not have the ruling of a mosque. Therefore, the "Tahiyyat al-Masjid" (greeting of the mosque) is not prescribed for it. An entering person may sit down or pray two voluntary rak'ahs if the time is not one during which prayer is forbidden. Jurists, such as Al-Haytami, have clarified that a musalla built on rented land does not take the ruling of a mosque. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen concurred with this, explaining that a rented musalla is not a mosque because it is owned by others and can be sold; thus, the rulings of a mosque are not established for it.
