Is it obligatory to maintain kinship ties with all relatives, even if they have allowed for no contact, bearing in mind that mutual visits only occur during holidays?

Scholars have differed regarding the kinship that is obligatory to maintain ties with. The Hanafis and a view among the Malikis hold that it refers to every unmarriageable kin (mahram). Whereas the well-known opinion among the Malikis and Imam Ahmad is that the kinship which must be connected includes both unmarriageable and marriageable kin. A reconciliation between the two views is possible: unmarriageable kin must be connected, and severing ties with them is forbidden. As for marriageable kin, severing ties with them is disliked, and connecting with them is recommended. Maintaining ties is achieved through visiting, assisting, fulfilling needs, offering greetings, and writing. If a person is wealthy and has poor kin, maintaining ties is achieved by spending money on them. Severing ties occurs by abandoning good treatment when one has the ability to do so.
