Is using snake oil forbidden (haram)?

There is no legal impediment to using snake oil if its use does not result in harm. It is among the permissible things, and it is permissible to eat it if it has been slaughtered according to Islamic law, as the Malikis held. However, if its use entails harm, then it is forbidden, according to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm." It is not permissible to benefit from it if it is dead.
