What is the ruling on my taking money given to me by its owner, who acquired it unlawfully and wishes to dispose of it as repentance to Allah?
What this person did — showing remorse, repenting, and getting rid of illicit money — is his duty, and we ask Allah to accept his repentance. As for you: if you are poor, there is no harm in you taking possession of that money and benefiting from it; it is permissible and lawful for you, based on what Al-Nawawi said: "If it [illicit money] is given to a poor person, it is not unlawful for the poor person; rather, it becomes lawful and permissible for him." And the author of "Al-Matalib" said: "And if illicit money is spent, it becomes permissible for whoever takes it rightfully." However, if you are wealthy, it is not permissible for you to benefit from it, and you are obligated to spend it in its rightful channels for the poor and needy, or for the general welfare of Muslims.
