How should one deal with the third gender: is it based on being male or female, and are their actions permissible? What is the ruling on someone born with both male and female genitalia? And how should one deal with someone who claims to have been raised as a girl?

If the questioner means by the 'third gender' the ambiguous hermaphrodite (khuntha mushkil), then if clear signs of masculinity or femininity appear on them, such as the growth of a beard or menstruation, they are to be treated according to the gender to which they clearly belong. If no signs appear, men should treat them as a woman and women as a man, and they may seek treatment to determine their condition.

However, if the questioner means effeminate men who willingly imitate women, these are cursed by the tongue of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and it is not permissible to deal with them.
