Is the occurrence of dryness for half a day on the seventh day of menstruation considered a state of purity, given that the duration of my menstruation is not fixed (ranging between 7 and 13 days)? And are the brownish discharge that appeared on the eighth day and the blood that appeared on the ninth day considered menstruation? And must I make up for fasting on both the eighth and ninth days, or only the ninth day?
Scholars differ regarding the yellowish and brownish discharge (ṣufra and kudra) that a woman sees outside of her regular menstrual period. The we adopt is that these discharges are not considered menstruation unless they occur during the usual period or if they are connected to blood. The majority of scholars, however, hold that they are considered menstruation absolutely if they occur during the time of possibility [for menstruation]. As for blood that reappears to a woman, it is considered menstruation if it occurs during the time of possibility. We advise the woman to act according to the opinion of the majority, and thus she should make up the fast of the day she saw the yellowish discharge and the following day on which she saw blood. If the day of the yellowish or brownish discharge was not within her usual days [of menstruation], then it is not considered menstruation. If the menstrual period varies in increase or decrease, then what counts is the established custom, which is the shorter duration.
