Is it permissible to listen to the duff (tambourine-like instrument) in anashid (Islamic vocal music), especially since some have become addicted to listening to what is called anashid, knowing that there are fatwas prohibiting the use of the duff for men?

The duff (tambourine) is among the musical instruments forbidden by the Sunnah and scholarly consensus, as indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "There will be people from my Ummah who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments to be lawful." However, the legal evidence makes an exception for its permissible use by women during weddings and Eid celebrations, as in the hadith of the two young girls who were beating the duff in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) house, and his saying: "The distinction between lawful and unlawful is the duff and the voice in marriage." The preponderant opinion is that the use of the duff is forbidden for men.
