Not all singing is forbidden; some of it is permissible if it is free from legal impediments. String instruments such as the oud are forbidden by the majority of scholars, while some of the early Muslims (Salaf) and the people of Medina permitted them. The most authoritative and relied-upon opinion is that anything involving musical instruments or inviting to immorality is forbidden.
