What is the ruling on marrying a woman of unknown lineage, such as the daughter of adultery, and what are its consequences if it takes place?

A righteous wife is one of the most important pillars of the family. Islam has emphasized her selection and made her the best of provisions. The Lawgiver has set forth criteria for her selection, the most important of which is religion, followed by the qualities that a person naturally desires, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A woman is married for four things: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty, and for her religion. So choose the religious woman, and you will prosper."

Among the characteristics of a righteous woman are: "The best of women is she who pleases you when you look at her, obeys you when you command her, and preserves your absence in herself and your wealth."

She should also be of known lineage from a noble environment. If this principle is neglected, the result of the marriage might be bitter. Based on considering lineage as a reason for marriage, marrying a woman of unknown lineage is contrary to what is preferable, due to the potential harms it may cause to the husband and offspring.
