What is the ruling regarding a husband swearing to his wife by saying: "Divorce be upon me if you leave the house, for she would be unlawful to me like my mother and sister," and is it permissible for him to allow her to visit her family after he regretted his oath?

If a woman complies with her husband's command to fulfill his oath, then nothing is incumbent upon him. However, if he wishes to retract his oath and permits her to leave, then he breaks his oath. If the wording of the oath was: "By divorce, if you leave the house, then you are forbidden to me like my mother and sister," then breaking the oath constitutes ẓihār, not divorce. It is not permissible for him to have intercourse with her until he performs the ẓihār expiation mentioned in Surat Al-Mujadilah: freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy persons.
